Google to restrict Android Market access on rooted phones

Google has been praised many times for it’s Android mobile platform as it use’s an openness, which has allowed users to root their handsets pretty easily. For the more advanced users, this means users can install custom ROMs on their handsets but, the main draw for rooting a handset is to remove network loaded bloatware, which most network providers are guilty of adding to various Android powered phones. Rooting also allows you more control over what you can do with your phone, such as being able to use it for WiFi tethering which some networks have disabled and are cracking down on users who re enable this feature.

However, from now on rooting your phone could have a negative impact for your handset. Google added movie rentals to the Android Market recently but, it became clear quickly that rooted devices were denied this service. The reason being down to DRM. With a rooted device, it’s possible to do things on the handset that might make it possible to bypass the DRM of the content.

Netflix have also taken a similar approach and it appears that it may not be long until they and music providers also take this approach. Currently Netflix verify the handling of videos on every device on the market to ensure the handset has it’s own DRM system in place before they allow the app to be released to specified handsets.

Samsung take top Android maker position in the US

During Q3 of 2010, Samsung now have almost a third of the total Android smartphone market in the US. An impressive 32.1% of Android handsets in the US are made by Samsung. This is an increase from 9.2% during Q4 2009. Much of which success is because of the Samsung Galaxy S, which can be adapted for the needs of every carrier. Samsung have also put a lot of their efforts into the Galaxy S, where as previously the company used to make 150+ handsets a year.

Samsung previously held a strong position in the Windows Mobile market and as well as continuing with Android, will also be focusing on Windows Phone 7 handsets, such as the Samsung Focus.

Google Reader released onto Android Market

Most know that Android is Google’s own operating system, primarily found on mobile devices but, also on tablets and the OS can also be booted onto netbooks and computers. Those who know this, would think many of Google’s products, such as Google Maps, Google Reader, etc, would be readily available. This isn’t the case though. For an RSS reader, Android users have needed to use a third party app, some of which are compatible with the Google Reader.

Google have now however released their own Google Reader onto the Android Market, so you can have the official product. It is free to download and you can add multiple accounts to the reader.
